Bringing more light into my office space…

It’s Thursday and it’s all good at FoxleyTowers; I’ve reviewed, edited and printed out Chapter Four …👏

I have an unwritten rule; once I’ve printed it out it’s ready for the Publisher’s perusal; Chapter One, Two, Three & Four are printed out. It’s Foxley’s law they’re done…😉

My next door neighbour knocked on my door again this morning; she’s cut the top of my very tall and deep front hedge today; only the inside to do now. Its looking fantastic and it brings more light into my office space whilst I’m writing… 💫☀️ 💫

How’s your day been so far? …👀

So, I’ve finished another chapter of my book…

Very chuffed at FoxleyTowers: got up at 7.30am and after feeding the wild birds, I made a pot of tea and got straight into writing; I’ve not written for eight days and really wanted to get back into my potential author chair…

I set about reviewing and editing another chapter of my SelfBook. Writing the background chapter has been quite difficult for me; it’s about the lead up to and onset of my health condition and before my first diagnosis. I’ve had to dig deep with honesty without being cathartic; I’ve now finished the chapter…

I’d had a break mid-morning and my next door neighbour asked me whether I would like her to trim my hedge at the front of my house with her hedge trimmer; she wanted something to do outside so she could exercise and get some fresh air…😁

So, I’ve finished another chapter of my book and the hedge at the front of the house has had the front and top trimmed, it’s been a very productive day! …🙏

Picking your Brains: Being around ‘Clock Watchers’.

Picking your brains; most of us generally speaking have appointments to keep and daily routines. However, some people seem to be obsessed with ‘time’ as if their life actually depended upon punctuality and are constantly clock watching.

If you have a chronic condition or are a laid back ‘go with the flow’ groover ‘clock watchers’ can potentially have a negative impact on you. (if you have a chronic condition and are a natural groover it can potentially be even more stressful…)

I’m not necessarily talking about hippie guys and chicks; I‘m talking about mental attitude and approach to life where you don’t get ‘time obsessed’ and you do successfully achieve what you want to achieve.

If you are chronically unwell and around a ‘clock watcher’ it could potentially feel stressful and impact on your health.

My first question is: How do you navigate around ‘time watchers’ to avoid the impact of their stress management approach?

This could be work colleagues, partners, other family members or/and friends.

My second question is: If you could think of a name for ‘clock watchers’ what would it be?

It can be as outrageous, funny or rude as you like….

My third question is: Are you a ‘clock watcher’?

If you’ve just checked the clock to see if you have enough time to answer these questions ~ the answer might be Yes.

The first thing that comes to mind for most people when talking about energy levels is probably measured in terms of the ability to do physical activities. Generally speaking chronic fatigue is often gauged by the inability to do physical activities by those experiencing the disease, carers and other sympathetic people.

Ironically, chronic fatigue in my view is not all about fatigue. If we empower fatigue to a hostage keeper status it will potentially sabotage improving overall health. Conversely, if we think solely of beating fatigue; those with chronic fatigue will likely just beat themselves up, over and over again.

It is widely understood amongst interested professionals and non-professionals that the human body needs physical activity to be able to produce physical energy; assuming that the body has natural energy reserves. An overall healthy human body has energy reserves unlike an unhealthy chronic fatigued body is arguably depleted of its reserves.

Likening the implications of ‘depleted reserves’ as trying to run a car on petrol fumes for at least six months; gives us some insight to the detrimental effect this could have on overall performance and over time the knock on effect damage this might cause to a human body.

Most car owners would investigate the first sign of ‘car fatigue’ and painstakingly nurture it back to peak performance. However, the worst case scenario is buying another car or use alternative modes of transport. We only have one body and we can’t trade it in; we owe it to ourselves to look after it if we want to experience a good quality of life.

Physical activity is not the only form of activity potentially feeding or draining our energy reserves; mental, emotional and spiritual activities all play a part in the depleting, replenishing, building and the potential maintaining of those reserves.

Experience has taught me that balancing energy usage is the overarching canopy that helps protect the potential effectiveness of other health improving choices and healthier lifestyle changes. Remember that it is energy usage on all levels; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Being consciously aware of the types of energy you use and the effect it has on you on a daily basis will empower you to make the right choices for you in relation to where you are now.

Whether you respond or react to life experiences can be beneficial or detrimental to recovery; don’t beat your self up about what you cannot do, enjoy and appreciate what you are able to right now. The choices you make in terms of what you do and what you don’t do on every level will influence your recovery path. Listen to your body and respond kindly; living in the now is important and learning to go ‘with your flow’ will help to improve the quality of your life.

Within this context saying, “No, I won’t do that today”, is not weak or a defeatist attitude. It is a sign of strength and commitment to looking after yourself and an indication regarding your determination to improve your overall health in the long term.

I would be sterling rich if I’d earned £1GB every time, over twenty years, I’d heard someone with ME/CFS say,

“Yes, but I haven’t got the time to make all those lifestyle changes, I’m too busy…!”

Unlike acute illness with a shelf life of a few weeks like flu, a cold or some virus doing the rounds; chronic disease can insidiously become the ‘norm’, potentially complex, needs specific attention and a lot of effort on your part.

If you are ‘plodding on just managing best way you can in the same old way’ the chances are the quality of your life will not change for the better any time soon.

If your thinking is that you are going to address it when for example; the kids get a bit older, my partner gets promotion and I can give up working, my son gets his qualifications or they find a cure then a list of endless plausible excuses will justify your avoidance for possibly years.

If you are relying on life becoming easier then life is controlling you as opposed to you being in control of your life; it is unlikely that the right time will ever come in relation to addressing your or a dependant’s chronic disease.

Let’s face it living with ME/CFS is at best challenging and at worst soul-destroying. You don’t want it and you don’t want to talk about it; nobody really understands.

If you are ready to make the necessary lifestyle changes to potentially improve the quality of your life; your chronic disease needs to become your priority. Make the choice of whether you want to live or merely survive; your choice will make all the difference to your future health and well-being.

It’s Friday and weekend is around the corner. I’m sending you something thought-provoking and kindly for the weekend!

The quality of your life starts with you; setting your boundaries, listening to your body, not justifying yourself to anyone and that includes yourself.

Come back on Monday and let me know how you got on with the 10 Steps to Self-Care; which one was the easiest and which one was the most difficult for you and why?

Wishing you a peaceful weekend.

Take care, see you on Monday…Cass
